Crypto firms go to the OCC for a bank charter

developing

Crypto and fintech firms applied to the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for national bank and national trust charters. Large banks, through the Bank Policy Institute, said the charters grant bank-like standing without bank-like supervision and weighed suing the regulator. In July 2026 Circle became the first stablecoin issuer to convert a conditional approval into a final one.

How to read this — and what we won't draw
Thick line = the story order a curator asserted (its colour = which story — a palette of equals, never good/bad).
Faint arcs = shared actors: two events that both mention the same actor, chained in date order. A connection of fact — never a claim they're one story.
Node size = independent sources (distinct newsrooms carrying their own reporting) — how much independent reporting, not whether it matters. Subtle today: many events have few.
Solid, brighter dot = confirmed (3+ independent witnesses) — brightness carries verification, never a hue change.
Dashed line = the declared story link — the one curated connection between stories, labelled for what it is.
Dot hue = the type of news — a descriptive category our curators set by hand (what kind of event this is). Six muted hues of equal weight: never good/bad, never more/less important. An event with no category yet keeps the neutral dot.

Actors weave the news together — hover one to light where it appears; select to pin it. A mention is an appearance, never a claim about a thread.

Every thread we follow, in one view — 5 so far. Scroll or pinch to zoom: the map shows the shape, a thread shows its chain of headline cards, an event opens its sources in place. Node size = independent sources (distinct newsrooms carrying their own reporting) — it renders subtly today, because many events have few. Faint arcs connect events that share an actor — including across stories, where an actor appears in more than one.
